Hemkund Sahib, or Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib Ji as it was earlier called, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. The Sanskrit word Hemkund literally translates to “bowl of ice”, and as the name suggests, this picturesque hill station located at an elevation of 4,632 meters above the sea level flaunts a breathtakingly splendid glacial lake at the heart of it, colloquially referred to as the Lokpal Lake. The shimmering water of the lake acts as the centerpiece of Hemkund Sahib, with seven snow-covered mountain peaks of the Himalayan ranges encircling its perimeter, each peak crowned with a holy Nishan Sahib. The peaks are collectively referred to as Hemkund Parvat.
